On the outskirts of Narooma, just a short drive from both Wallaga Lake and Moruya, you'll find one of the most impressive geological sights on the NSW South Coast. The Glasshouse Rocks and pillow lava formations aren’t just beautiful they’re rare, fascinating, and well worth the detour.
Towering sea stacks rise from Surf Beach like natural sculptures, shaped by millions of years of waves and time. These are the Glasshouse Rocks, and they date back over 400 million years. Nearby, around Bar Rock Lookout and Australia Rock, you’ll find strange, rounded lava shapes, known as pillow lava, formed when underwater volcanoes erupted eons ago.
There are interpretive signs to guide you, and the views? Absolutely worth slowing down for.
Why it’s worth it:
This is a place where science meets scenery. It’s not crowded, not commercial, just raw, rugged beauty and a story written in stone.
Getting there from BIG4 Wallaga Lake Holiday Park:
Drive south along Bermagui Road and take the coast route through Central Tilba to Narooma (about 30 mins). Park at Bar Rock Road for the lookout and pillow lava. Glasshouse Rocks are best viewed from Surf Beach at low tide.
Getting there from Moruya Holiday Park:
Head south on the Princes Highway to Narooma (about 35 mins). Follow the signs to Bar Rock Road or Surf Beach. Both are close to Narooma town centre with easy parking.
Go explore the coast’s ancient secrets...they’re just down the road.
