A peaceful escape in Toowoomba’s Garden City

Tucked within the University of Southern Queensland grounds, Ju Raku En Japanese Garden is one of the largest, most authentic Japanese gardens in Australia - and a favourite with visitors to Toowoomba. Designed to embody harmony and tranquillity, it’s the perfect place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the beauty of simplicity.

A garden built for serenity

Spanning three hectares, Ju Raku En (meaning “to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place”) was designed in partnership between Toowoomba and its Japanese sister city, Takatsuki. Every element from the curved wooden bridges and stepping stones to the waterfalls and koi ponds, reflects centuries of Japanese landscape philosophy.

Take a quiet stroll through the garden’s pathways, pause under the cherry blossoms in spring, or watch the ripples move gently across the lake. With its graceful balance of water, stone, and greenery, Ju Raku En feels a world away from the bustle of everyday life.

No matter your reason for visiting, the garden’s calm atmosphere and carefully crafted beauty invite you to linger.

Plan your visit

Ju Raku En Japanese Garden is located on the corner of West Street and the University Drive entrance, within the University of Southern Queensland campus. Entry is free, and the garden is open daily from morning until dusk. Bring a camera, a picnic rug, and a few quiet hours to simply enjoy the moment.

Distance from BIG4 Toowoomba Holiday Park:

Around 10 minutes’ drive, making it an easy and peaceful outing from your base.
